Nan is both a town and a province set in an unspoiled corner of northern Thailand, close to the Laotian border. It is a town of around 21,000 people and retains its essential Thai-ness. In 2025, Nan was proclaimed a UNESCO City of Arts, Crafts and Folk Art. It is an ideal base to relax and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and tastes of the area.

Two traditional long boats racing on a river, each crewed with rowers wearing matching shirts, with one boat in blue and the other in pink. A person stands at the bow of each boat, guiding them. On the riverbank, people are watching the race, with a backdrop of houses, trees, and a sky filled with clouds.

Last summer, my husband & I joined Duang’s August session of her Nan Food/Culture Experience….and what a wonderful adventure it was! Equal parts food & local culture, we greatly enjoyed making a variety of Thai dishes and exploring the environs of Nan Province from mountains and rivers to temples, family farms & out of the way restaurants in beautiful locations. The humor & comaraderie between Duang, our tour guide M’am & our hotelier Khun Tae set the tone for our Nan Experience: educational and energetic,  lively yet relaxing, sociable congeniality among participants and  an underlying festive vibe in everything. Quite unique!
